30/3/21 - Southeastern - Rail to Refuge
Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cornwall, meets pioneers of lifesaving train travel scheme.
Rail to Refuge is a joint initiative between rail companies and Women’s Aid in which train operators cover the cost of train tickets for women, men and children travelling to refuge accommodation. Over the past year, train operators have provided free tickets to 1,348 people, including 362 children over five, equivalent to four survivors travelling to safety each day on average.
First introduced by Southeastern in September 2019, and then Great Western Railway on its routes in March 2020, all train operators joined the Rail to Refuge scheme on 9 April 2020.
